Wooden lotus ornament
Camphor wooden ornament of lotus flowers which are deeply carved to achieve a sense of depth. This architectual piece of delicate woodwork was part of other fine woodwork ornaments of an old house in Fujian.
The lotus plant started to be represented through the art of the 12th and 13th century in China and was linked to the Buddhist images of purity and rebirth. “While rooted in the mud, its flowers blossom on long stalks as if floating above the muddy waters of attachment and desire.”
Camphor wood was often used as building materials, their moderate density makes it easy to shape and has a unique fragrance and durability. It has a good resistance to termite and other insect attacks and is resistant to decay.
